MONTE SACRO TOUR

On the north of the municipality of Mattinata rises Monte Sacro which with its 874 meters is the highest peak in the Eastern Gargano. A journey of about 5 km round trip that winds through typically Mediterranean vegetation characterized by oaks, black pines, elms and cypresses in a calcareous clayey land that gives the rocks the typical reddish color. The name of “Monte Sacro”, originally called Monte Dodoneo and linked to the pagan cult of Jupiter, is linked to the appearance of the archangel Michael following which on the site was born one of the most flourishing Benedictine abbeys between the VI and XIII dc, of which today remain some marvelous ruins. The itinerary is also known for the flowering of splendid examples of Gargano orchids in spring.
